Practicing Acceptance

By November 13, 2016No Comments

Sometimes we need a reminder to accept things as they are, and practice the act of acceptance.

This does not mean that we succumb to being unhappy or to give up because we don’t think we can make a change – these things are different.

What I am talking about is the type of acceptance when something happens that we truly can’t go back and change.

This week I was out for lunch with my dad, my son and my two brothers. I go to put my cell phone in my diaper bag pocket and instead it falls out and I crack the screen (for the second time in the last two months). My brother reminds me, “It’s just a phone”. So true. While my dad reminds me that  “There is nothing that I can do about it now”.

It is easy to dwell on unfortunate events that have happened that we truly can’t change. What a waste of time!

While this is true, it is easier said than done.

Making a conscious effort to accept what has happened  – practising acceptance – we can truly live happier lives.

Another unfortunate event happened last night. I had put the wrong date in my calendar for a dear friend’s birthday party, only to realize that it was last night (at mid-night after the event had already happened). Again, a good friend reminded me, “It’s only a party.” I, again, heard my dad’s wise words, “There is nothing you can do about it now.”

So…. next time you encounter one of these situations where there truly isn’t anything you can do about it now, rather than worrying and wasting precious time, practice acceptance.

Happy accepting!
