Being at home during a world pandemic has been a lot of things — challenging is the first word that comes to mind.. but there are also many others (which I will save for another post.. another day…).
Many of you reading this will mostly likely have children. During this world “lock-down”, we have had to get creative. Therefore, I wanted to create a little short-list if you will of the top 10 things that we have incorporated into our daily routine while we wait for life to “resume”:
- Painting – yes, this can get messy. It’s a great activity to do first thing in the morning. Right out of pyjamas and into “paint clothes”. Dollar stores have a great variety. Other stores like Walmart and Michaels are also great options. My favourite is the Crayola kits – lots of colour options and easy to get out of clothes and kid tables.
- Daily craft – this can be anything from colouring, decorating toilet paper rolls or making something out of play dough. Our favourites are play dough and cookie cutters.
- Planting a new seed and watching it grow. This has become our new favourite thing — little planting pots, some dirt and seeds. It’s also fun to have your child paint the flower pot.
- Reading. It’s been fun to dust off some old favourites from the bookshelf. Especially books about summer to get us excited!
- Watching an episode of Sesame Street. This takes me back to my childhood. Each day is a new educational topic. The puppets are also helping to explain Covid, which is pretty amazing in helping kids understand what’s going on.
- Baking or cooking a meal. Getting kids engaged in the kitchen is a great past time… and you can enjoy a snack at the end of it. A win-win!
- Creative snack time. Our favourite is using the muffin tins with a variety of snacks (idea credit goes out to Sweet Pea Play Cafe). Making cheese shapes using cookie cutters is always fun!
- Playing outside in the yard or exploring the neighbourhood.
- Building a fort or playing restaurant. Something that is engaging for you and your child to do together, and that sparks the imagination.
- Having downtime. This is just as important as being busy and entertained. It’s a nice break for the kids… and you… we usually have 3:30 p.m. (give or take half an hour) as our down time. I let Jax choose what he wants to do…
Hope these can inspire a new activity in your home in these coming days. I would also love to hear what your favourite past times are – send me a message!aa
